History

Our school was estabilished in 1936 and eventually re-opened in 1945. Since then it functions without any interruption. Ľ. J Šulek Comprehensive school was moved into the current building in 1964 and underwent a reconstruction & renovation. Since 2004 all classrooms are under one roof, however, it is still being renovated and re-decorated every summer.

The building of our school is more than a hundred years old. The construction started in the year 1910
and in 1911 the school for boys was opened here. The school existed till 1945 and during that period the building
was also used by several other schools due to the lack of space. From the year 1945 the building was used by a secondary vocational school and after the educational reform in 1960 a primary Slovak school was established here (before that there were mainly Hungarian schools in the town) which was later converted into a general secondary school (gymnazium).
The school is named after Ľudovít Jaroslav Šulek (1822 – 1849), a martyr who was imprisoned and died in the fortress in Komárno. He was a priest, poet and publicist who fought for the rights of Slovak people.
In the photo below you can see a memorial to him.
